内容摘要
Following Lichu Lin (2019)’s innovative development of ‘Knowledge-Intensive Language Learning’ (‘KILL’) as a ‘Soft CLIL’ (Ikeda, 2013) approach to content-based EAP, I shall illustrate how to plan a CLIL lesson that is knowledge-intensive but also integrates the teaching of the 4 language skills. I shall also discuss important issues such as how to use translanguaging and trans-semiotizing strategies (i.e., allowing students’ familiar linguistic and cultural resources to scaffold content and language learning) while ensuring that students get the opportunities to use the target language (L2) and genres for academic purposes. In particular, I shall present our experience in developing the ‘Multimodalities-Entextualization Cycle’ (MEC) as a critical pragmatic approach to knowledge-intensive English language education that both scaffolds students’ content and academic language learning, and affirms and capitalizes on their familiar cultural and linguistic resources. Please bring along a unit of work (e.g. materials, tasks, assessment rubrics/exemplars) in a course that you are teaching (e.g. can be a language course, or a content course taught in students’ L2) and we shall workshop the MEC as a curriculum/ lesson planning tool.
